Maqui Berry Basics

If you happen to be one of those people asking what in heaven’s name is a Maqui berry, rest assured, you are not alone. In fact if a poll were to be done at this very moment it would reveal that people who don’t have a clue as to what a maqui berry is, by far outnumber those that do know.

The maqui berry is actually a small edible fruit, which has been the focus of much attention in the past couple of years. It is a berry, as the name suggests, purple-black in color, and is about the size of a small grape. A favorite of birds, the maqui berry fruit is indigenous to Chile and also goes by the name Chilean wineberry. Other names that have been used when referring to the maqui berry include koelon, ach, clon, queldrón, maquei, and simply maqui.

While the maqui berry does have an exquisite and unique taste, it is not these that account for the surge in recent times in the popularity of the fruit. It could be argued that by virtue of the fact that the maqui berry is not grown in the United States this qualifies it as exotic and even ostentatious. This however, still does not explain its fast-growing demand. What actually has people scrambling to source the maqui berry is the significant health benefits to be derived from its use.

In the way of health benefits the maqui berry is a first class source of potassium, vitamin C and iron. These are all vital to the health and well being of human beings. There is another aspect pertaining to health though that is responsible for the spotlight currently being shone on the maqui berry. This has to do with it being recently designated the leader in the category of superfruits. Superfruit is a term used to refer to fruits that not only possess markedly above-average levels of nutritional value, but also very high antioxidant qualities. It is claimed in some circles that the term superfruit was coined solely for marketing purposes. Some of the other contenders for the top superfruit title are the pomegranate, noni, mangosteen, and the acai.

It is said that the Mapuche Indians unwittingly played a major role in drawing the attention of the world to the maqui berry. The warriors of this tribe displayed exceptional strength and endurance it is told, and their bodies seemed incapable of experiencing fatigue. In an effort to ascertain why this was so, subsequent investigations into the Mapuche Indian’s lifestyle and diet pointed to the maqui berry as being the culprit. It was found that in the same way that the fruit was impervious to the sun and other external agents, its consumption by human beings resulted in a similar effect. This is due in large part to the presence of flavonoids and anthocyanins. The maqui berry fruit produces outstanding results in its defense of the human body and its assistance in the detoxification process is quite significant.

Scientists and researchers are currently deeply involved in determining exactly what the capabilities of the maqui berry fruit are.  The overwhelming consensus so far however, is that it appears quite promising.
